Ratz! I've been skiing on the Atomic Betaride 9.22s and was hoping to slap the same skins on my new 9th Ward twin tip Powder skis. The logic seemed sound but apparently the weight distribution vs surface area of the skin doesn't work. Fortunately I know where I come in on the $170 soent vs a ruined powder day debate.

Funny, I experienced almost the opposite of your experience with skinny skins on fat skis. I bought a pair of Fischer T-stix 92's last year and used some very skinny skins on them first time out. I found that climbing strait up hard pack was no big deal... same contact patch as I had touring on my skinny skis.

It was when I got in deep snow my partner was going up stuff with ease that I simply couldn't do. I surmised the reason was the fat skis spread my weight out more and resulted in less compression of the snow beneath the ski. Less compression, less traction and thefore... a wider skin is required to maintain the same level of grip.

I, however, did not try any traversing on the hardpack with the skinny skins so, I could see how that'd be a problem as well. Either way, your conclusion is spot on. Fat skis do need fat skins.
