Very informative, thanks for the info. I am still on the fence about buying the go pro 2 for kiteboarding as I coudl not find much info about whether it has any kind of image stabilization. I made a bad investment on the Oregon Scientific helmet cam a few years ago and regret wasting money on somethign that never really worked well at all and was too "shaky cam" to watch when it I did get it to work. I especially apprciate your remarks about having to fine tune the mounts in order to see what the cam is pointing at. There is no easy way to do that and I ended up with some excellent shaky cam footage of the water 2 feet in front of my board.

The section on mounting options is a really good read! Thanks for going in to so much detail this helps in knowing what mounts to splash out on!

They do break. I use a HD GoPro on the tail section on my street moto. Good thing I was riding w my friend. He watched it fly like a bird as the bracket failed. The housing is amazing. Camera was fine... flew off at about 85 or so.

Some great info on here. I just picked up a Hero 960 and was looking for ideas on mounting it. I've used bar-mounted cameras before and there always seems to be too much vibration unless you're riding on flat pavement. I'm going to rig something up based on the photo you have where it's mounted to a pack strap.

Great writeup Lee!

Very helpful for those of us who have not yet purchased a GoPro. I am close to buying the GoPro, but still also considering a Kodak Zi8 with wide angle lens adapter and then tinkering with my own mounting systems. The Zi8 would be much more usable for "normal" shoots, and since there is so much tinkering with mounting the GoPro anyway it seems like a DIY with the Kodak might not be any more difficult. Obviously, possible water damage and audio wind noise would have to be dealt with, but like you said, this stuff requires tinkering (no matter which way I go.)

The Kodak does allow external mics with a windscreen, although obviously that would create an entirely new set of issues.

Any thoughts on the Kodak Zi8 route?

GoPro makes the best cameras without a doubt. The lens is easy to scratch. Lens protectors are now available to protect the camera and case. Never get a scratch on your GoPro with mytuffstuff lens protectors
