The Absa Cape Epic stage race, held in South Africa, has been dubbed by some as the mountain bike racer’s equivalent of The Tour de France. The race is well, epic, and always fields some of the best mountain bike racers in the world. This year’s race consisted of 8 days of racing (prologue and 7 stages) throughout South Africa.
Two-person teams complete each stage together and perform on-course mechanicals. The total field for this year was over 1200 riders from all over the world. This year’s stages ranged from the 14 mile prologue to the 83 mile Stage 3. With riders spending many hours in the saddle, it goes without saying that weather and mechanicals can wreak havoc on the race.
