Fresh Gear: Easton Introduces Gravel-specific Chainrings

    0
By Jason Mitchell on April 12, 2018 News, Road & Gravel, Videos

And here we all thought that 1x drivetrains were optimal for cyclocross and gravel adventures. Actually, 2×11 is still quite popular for cyclocross and not everyone has bought into the 1x movement for road or gravel (even though SRAM Force 1 is pretty awesome).

While Easton certainly offers 1x chainrings, they are now introducing a set of chainring options they feel are optimized for the gear ratios needed for gravel riding and racing as well as cyclocross.

Because gravel bikes are typically heavier and have larger tires, they don’t get off the line as quickly as a lightweight race bike. As such, we should not (according to Easton) be riding road-specific gearing — it’s simply not the right tool for the job. As such, Easton has introduced the following chainring combos for specific purposes.

    • Only available for direct-mount cranksets
    • 47/32 gravel racing combo (540 grams on EC90 SL crankset)
    • 46/36 cyclocross
    • 46/30 adventure combo
    • EA90 aluminum
    • 45mm chainline
    • MSRP: $149.99 US

With more and more of us venturing into gravel, dirt and cyclocross, these smaller-diameter chainrings can provide better low-end gearing and torque when needed most. And, riding that long gravel race or adventure ride with these chainrings will certainly provide lower gearing for long days in the saddle.
