Review: Osmo Rapid Recovery Mix

Jason MitchellBy Jason MitchellJune 16, 2021No Comments5 Mins Read

With a myriad of recovery mixes on the market, there’s something for every taste, nutrition goals and recovery needs. Osmo Nutrition is a relatively recent player in the hydration space with targeted formulas that do things differently than others on the market. For Osmo Rapid Recovery, there’s a secret ingredient that aids delivery of proteins aimed at recovery.

Osmo Rapid Recovery Mix Details:

  • Proprietary protein blend with specific formulations for each flavor
  • Uses two types of protein (whey +micellar casein) to accelerate glycogen restoration
  • Green tea leaf extract for a touch of caffeine
  • Available in Chocolate and Vanilla (formulation varies)
  • Mix with water or milk (regular, soy or almond)
  • 14 servings per bottle
  • MSRP: $35

Targeted recovery for endurance athletes

Those 30 minutes after an intense exercise is the “Golden Window” (as Osmo calls it). During that time, it’s essential to replenish the body and provide targeted nutrients to aid in recovery. Why is that? Well, after tearing up muscle fibers and searing lungs, your body rapidly works to restore normalcy. The wrong recovery fuel may in fact, throw a monkey wrench into proper recovery. But, the right mixture of proteins and carriers can help rebuild tissues to enhance the gains made during hard efforts.

Osmo frames that recovery window this way:

“The three most important things to accomplish during the Golden Window are 1) stopping the body’s exercise-induced catabolic (breakdown) response; 2) taking in high-quality protein to facilitate muscle repair; and 3) restoring the body’s glycogen stores.”

As the saying goes, “no pain, no gain” right? You definitely don’t want to have all that pain go to waste and that’s just what Osmo’s Rapid Recovery Mix aims to do. Utilizing fast-acting whey protein with long-lasting micellar casein, Osmo’s proprietary blend aims to stop continued muscle breakdown after workouts. And, all that with a touch of caffeine, from free tea leaf extract, has tested out to be 66% more effective in glycogen replacement over carbs and protein alone.

Perusing the protein powder shelves, you’ll find whey protein as the most common source. Uniquely, Osmo uses whey protein and casein in a single mix that’s not optimized for weightlifters, but for endurance sports athletes. As the official nutrition provider for 3x World Champion cyclist Peter Sagan and his WorldTour team, Oslo is dedicated to helping cyclists hit their fitness goals through hydration and recovery.

Taste and performance thoughts

I’ll be 100% honest… testing one protein powder’s ability to deliver targeted recovery over another isn’t something I can really feel. I’ve used big bins of protein mixes from Amazon and pre-mixed protein shake containers from Costco at various times. I like them all and know that they are giving me good amounts of recovery benefits. But, I daresay that none of those formulations are as optimized for the recovery demands faced by high-level cyclists. So, I’m just going to trust Osmo on this one. I do feel good and muscle soreness is reduced after using this mix after long rides.

As far as taste goes, both flavors are definitely consumable with just water, if that’s all you’ve got. But, for the most robust flavor, I’d recommend regular old leche or almond milk. I didn’t have a chance to mix it with chocolate milk, but I hear that’s pretty good.

Two scoops in my 12 oz shaker bottle yields a pretty good-tasting recovery drink. I do appreciate the authentic Madagascar vanilla bean flavor. Recovery drinks (like ice cream) are best served by actual flecks of vanilla bean. A few hard shakes and it mixes right up without an agitator. They do tend to be just a teeny bit grainy, but it doesn’t distract from the taste or overall texture. The chocolate flavor tastes like a chocolate malt. The more you shake it, the more “malty” it gets too. It’s hard to say which flavor is best, but the vanilla is certainly more versatile.

Looking over the nutrition facts, each flavor and formulation is quite different. yes, the core ingredients remain the same. Chocolate has 10 more calories per serving and also more sugars. Again, these variances aren’t anything you can “feel” so choose your favorite flavor and recover away. Many protein powders aim to be appetite suppressants and the like, but Osmo has this one pegged as rapid recovery for cyclists and other endurance athletes.

The Good

  • Unique formulations targeted at endurance athlete recovery
  • Optimized for that 30-minute recovery window
  • Good flavors
  • Mixes well with water or your choice of milk
  • Easy to drink and digest

The Bad

  • Gotta get on it right after your workout
  • Hard to say if I can “feel the difference”

The Bottom Line Osmo Rapid Recovery Drink Mix

To optimize that 30 minute recovery window after a morning ride, Oslo is a great choice. Mix up a couple of scoops with milk and down it in a jiffy for maximum recovery.
