The “John Hancock” jersey
Materials have changed a lot over the past few years and fabrics have become lighter, more breathable and functional. Velocio has a winning formula with their Signature Jersey and it’s made for long days in the saddle — no matter how or where you ride.
Pulling it on, you’ll immediately be enveloped by a cohesive feel. The recycled Italian milled fabric feels luxe and smooth. All that stretch provides uninhibited comfort on and off the bike — so much so that I find myself wearing it long after a ride is complete. But, that stretchy comfort does come with a lack of compression. I don’t have a svelte climber’s body, so the man bod does shine through. However, I never feel constrained by the jersey, so it’s a good trade.
I appreciate the modern collar height. It’s not a zero collar design, but is very minimalistic. With that, you don’t ever feel like you’re wearing a turtleneck. Traditional collars should be reserved for long-sleeve jerseys only. I do notice the zipper having trouble getting situated in both the top and bottom garages. When it’s in place at the top, it can be difficult to grab the zipper pull. Once you do, it’s a pretty reliable one-handed unzip/zip experience.
When it comes to loading this one up, you won’t find pleated pockets for maximum hauling. No, you get ample-sized pockets for most rides. Should a longer ride be on the agenda, you may need to utilize on-bike storage. Loaded up with the usual things for a 1-3 hour ride (wind jacket, tools, tube, gels, phone), you should be fine. Anything beyond that and you’ll wish for a little more structure and capacity. Velocio’s unique top flap does keep things contained while still allowing relatively-easy access. The lip can grab items a little, but that’s the intent.
On the bike, you’ll notice that the fabric does breathe really well, but isn’t as wispy as a true “climber’s jersey” like the Sportful Light Pro Jersey (review coming). After a long, grueling climb, you’ll be pleased to find that the fabric has breathed well all along the way. Yes, you’ll experience some saturation in the chest and back, but after a brisk descent, it pretty much dissipates in the warm and dry Utah air. When things are more humid, it will take longer, but it holds up well. I’ve worn it both with and without the Velocio Gravel Base Layer with much success. And, it matches up great with both the Velocio Luxe V2 (review coming) and Foundation Bib Shorts.
I dig that Velocio has this jersey available in classic, solid colors. You can’t go wrong with any of them as a timeless jersey in your collection. Admittedly, all this goodness does come at a price, but it has held up well to repeated use, washings and non-washings alike. I can reasonably wear it on 2-3 rides without washing.
Fit: I’m 5’11” and 175 lbs. wearing the size medium jersey (my usual size in Velocio).
- So lightweight and comfortable
- Great arm length
- Stretchy for sure
- Good sized pockets with added security (and protective zippered pocket for wallet)
- Classic lines and style
- Hem features silicone grip all the way around
- A climber’s jersey will breathe even better
- Zipper garages do get in the way
- Not as compressive as some would like
The Bottom Line: Velocio Signature Jersey
As the one jersey that represents Velocio, this is excellent. With solid breathability and comfort, the Signature Jersey fits well and looks sleek and modern in a lasting design. Collar height is just right and the brand’s unique, lipped pockets keep your items securely in place. While some jerseys also eliminate the 360-degree silicone hem to reduce bulk, I appreciate that Velocio has kept that here because it stays put and provides adequate coverage — no matter how aggressively I ride.
