The HOKA Speedgoat has long been one of the go-to trail running shoes for folks tackling long single track races to casual hikes. With this seventh generation, HOKA is not reinventing the shoe, they are refining details along the way. The result is a shoe that feels more polished, that has a sleek and sexy design, is lighter and more responsive than ever, with the same confidence-inspiring ride that made the Speedgoat a favorite in the first place.

First Impressions

I tested the Speedgoat 7 in a women’s size 8.5 wide, wearing them for trail runs, day hikes, and everyday dog walks. That variety of use gave me a good sense of how the show performs across different terrains and distances. Whether covering rocky single track or walking several miles around town, the Speedgoat 7 delivered the function and traction that has made HOKA and the Speedgoat so popular.

At first glance, the Speedgoat looks familiar. The signature oversized midsole remains, along the with aggressive Vibram sole – things you can expect from HOKA. The upgrades to this new design are subtle but noticeable once you put them on the trail. Several years ago I wore the Speedgoat 4 – this shoe was my go-to, I trained and finished a marathon in this shoe. The Speedgoat 7 has some noticeable change since my last lap in the 4.

The engineered mesh upper feels lighter and more breathable than previous versions, while the redesigned heel collar and mid-foot hold create a more dialed-in fit without feeling restrictive. This shoe is light and ready to play – don’t expect to need to “break-in” these trail shoes.

Fit & Comfort

My HOKA size across other models is generally an 8.5 wide. The Speedgoat 7 runs smaller than expected. Even wearing the wide version in my usual size, the fit felt shorter and much more snug than some of the other HOKA options. I’d recommend sizing up at least a half size for this shoe.

Other than the size, the cushioning was exactly what I’d expect from HOKA. There is plenty of protection underfoot without feeling overly soft or unstable. Despite the generous stack height, the shoe feels predicable on uneven terrain. The updated mesh upper of this shoe was designed to have good breathability. While I see these design changes from previous models, I also felt like my feet felt hot every time on put this model on for a run or walk. The RPET material used for this shoe is made predominantly of plastic water bottles and other recycled PET packaging waste, polyester fiber and textile scrap. While I truly love the use of recycled waste in more and more products, I also feel like the design lends itself to more trapped heat and moisture.

On the Trail

The Speedgoat was designed for rough terrain, this is a trail shoe through and through, and that’s where the seventh version continues to shine. On trail runs and hikes, the 5 mm lugs of the Vibram Megagrip outsole provides excellent traction on loose dirt and gravel. The upgraded lug pattern bites confidently into softer surfaces while remaining predictable on hard-packed trail.

The treasured HOKA cushion earns its pay on the descent. Long downhill sections feel noticeably less punishing, helping to reduce fatigue and keep you clocking the miles.

The Speedgoat is an attractive shoe – which means I wanted to wear these beauties around town and out to walk the dogs. While it’s undeniably designed for trail use, the cushion makes it an easily transferable shoe when wore for pavement and in-town use. This show is built to go the miles and the light and cushioned design will help keep you feet healthy and happy in the process. The Speedgoat 7 design prioritized stability and protection – this is not a minimalists shoe and there are more nimble options for runners and walkers who don’t want to full-blown trail tread or a larger-profile design. My opinion is that the best shoe is the one you don’t notice or think about. The Speedgoat 7 accomplishes this for me – the 5MM heel-to-toe drop has been helpful for me in working with some Achilles pains during my runs. The light 8.3 oz weight of this shoe keeps your foot feeling easy and agile.

Cushion & Ride

As mentioned, the Speedgoat 7 strikes a balance between comfort and responsiveness. The shoe is light with enough energy return that your legs don’t feel sluggish with the drag of a hard or heavy shoe. And the emphasis remains on protecting your legs over long distances rather than a true speed finder. For ultra and marathon distances, I couldn’t think of a better combination. The Speedgoat 7 is an everyday shoe. If you are trying to crush a PR or looking for a minimalist fit then there are other shoes on the market that may better suit these goals. For everyday miles, hiking, trail runs, and just longer days outside, the Speedgoat 7 feels just right.

Durability

The updated upper of the Speedgoat 7 feels more robust without adding additional weight. My experience with HOKA is that after continual use – long miles and daily use – the mesh and outsole wear at a reasonable pace with durability and continual grip. I expect the Speedgoat 7 to be just as durable. The Vibram Megagrip outsoles continue to be one of the better-preforming rubber compounds for balancing grip with longevity. As with previous Speedgoat versions, runners can expect hundreds of miles before experience midsole compression issues.
