Fresh Wheels: Boyd Cycling Trailblazer Wheelset for XC or Gravel

Jason MitchellBy Jason MitchellMarch 25, 2020No Comments2 Mins Read

The humble folks at Boyd Cycling are on a roll (literally) and the new Trailblazer lightweight XC/Gravel wheelset is coming in wicked-light yet durable enough for challenging XC, gravel or cyclocross racing.  When I say light, I’m talking sub-1400 grams for the pair (1380 grams to be exact). They aren’t built for aerodynamics, so we’re talking a modest 25mm depth that will never get caught in crosswinds and won’t ever hold you back should you aim for that KOM.

As with most modern wheels, these are a nice 26mm internal width that makes them suitable for 2.1-2.4″ MTB or 32-50mm gravel tires. Simply choose your axles (Boost F/R or Standard Thru-axle) and select your size (650b/27.5 or 700c/29er) and load them up. While they can be used for both XC and Gravel, you’ll likely need to choose one or the other if you have a modern XC race bike with Boost spacing. But, at $1650, the new Trailblazer wheelset remains economically-priced, all things considered.

Boyd Cycling Trailblazer Wheelset Specs:

  • Hookless carbon rim design tested to MTB standards
  • Available in 27.5/650b or 29/700c
  • Quest Disc MTB hubs with J-bend spokes
  • Boost or standard thru-axle spacing available
  • Tubeless-ready out of the box
  • Specs: 25mm depth with 26mm inner width
  • Weight: 1380 grams/pair
  • MSRP: $1650 pair
