Review: Black Diamond Women’s Deploy 3L Shell

The Black Diamond Women’s Deploy 3L Shell is the essential lightweight shell you need in your pack. Originally built as a race layer for the mountain runners, this ultralight shell fits perfectly in the “always bring it, hopefully never need it” category. After spending some rainy pacific northwest activities in this jacket it’s proven to be the staple emergency shell that I will never forget to pack for those unpredictable weather days.

Lightweight Protection For When The Weather Turns

The standout feature of the Deploy 3L is just how light and packable it is. At around 8 ounces it disappears into a running vest or day pack and takes up just the right amount of space. It’s a shell that is easy to justify bringing even when the forecast looks clear.

The Deploy 3L is fully waterproof with a three-layer shell. Black Diamond uses their BD.dry membrane with fully taped seams, giving this piece the fully waterproof protection you want when in the backcountry. The thin fabric used for this jacket feels soft and flexible. It moves easily and does not have the stiff and suffocating feel of some waterproof shells out there. I think the downside to this is that the 10D fabric is relatively light rather than burly, so rips are a real possibility.

Minimalism meets practicality

This shell is a minimalist piece, which means it won’t feature pit-zips, oversized pockets, or adjustable cinching. What you loose in features you gain in light packable practicality. This jacket has two zipped hand pockets, offering storage for small essentials. There is also one internal mesh pocket with doubles as the stuff sack for packing this jacket.

Fit and Comfort

The Deploy 3L has an athletic trim fit. It layers well without feeling too bulky. And the slight stretch the fabric helps it feel mobile and breathable. It pairs perfectly with a base layer or thin mid-layer. For me, the Black Diamond Coefficient LT Hoody (review coming soon!) and the Deploy 3L are a match made in heaven on chillier damp days in the Northwest.

Versatile and Essential

The Deploy 3L has earned a permanent spot in my pack for mountain bike rides, quick trips around town, long-effort hikes, backcountry multi-day adventures, trails runs, and even ferry rides in western Washington. While this piece is perfectly suited for deep backcountry days with unpredictable weather, its lightweight design and packable simplicity make it an easy essential for any outdoor adventure.

That said, the recycled polyester ripstop fabric feels surprisingly durable for such a lightweight shell and should hold up well over time. With the premium price tag, though, I’ll probably reserve the Deploy for activities where its ultralight performance truly shines and continue reaching for my less expensive raid shells when pack space and weight aren’t as crucial. Simply put, this jacked is the Cadillac of lightweight rain shells and I will work hard to keep it nice and working well for years.
