In the Hopper: Wahoo Fitness RPM Cadence Sensor

Jason MitchellBy Jason MitchellJuly 10, 2014No Comments2 Mins Read

Those looking to monitor their training in detail and improve their pedal cadence can do so on the cheap with the Wahoo Fitness RPM Cadence Sensor. This little Bluetooth 4.0 and ANT+ sensor is tiny, weighs next to nothing (7 gr.) and promises easy cadence tracking. I ride a lot and do geek out on some things, but intricate training details are not my thing. I just track speed and distance and use Strava to store my logs — that’s about it. But, am I leaving power or efficiency on the table every time I climb 3000 ft. up the Alpine Loop?

Cadence is just one data point in cycling performance. For serious cyclists, they can figure it out by “feel” because they spend lots of time in the saddle. But, for new cyclists or for those looking to eke out every bit of efficiency, the RPM Cadence Sensor could be a good place to start. As a rule-of-thumb, maintaining 90rpm is considered ideal, so figuring out which gear combinations and fine-tuning your cadence could pay off on your local group rides, gran fondo’s or local crits.

Wahoo Fitness RPM Cadence Sensor and Fitness App

Wahoo Fitness RPM Cadence Sensor Features:

    • Bluetooth 4.0 and ANT+ compatibility — NEW
    • Works with Wahoo Fitness App and many other popular cycling apps
    • Will connect with GPS devices using ANT+
    • Weighs only 7 grams
    • Easily mounted on crank arm
    • Can be worn on the shoe (but works best in vertical position, I’ve read)
    • Requires iPhone 4S and newer or certain Android devices
    • Battery lasts up to 2 years
    • MSRP: $49.99

The RPM Cadence Sensor looks like a simple solution to capture and optimize pedal cadence on a variety of bikes (including spin bikes). If cadence is something you adhere to religiously, this little number is easy on the wallet and may just get you what you need. I’ll be testing it and report my experience in a few months.
