For those of you who haven’t been fortunate enough to ski at Silverton Mountain, now is your chance! They have just announced an extra day per week of skiing/riding through December and some of the most epic riding conditions to date. The place is awesome and you will definitely have the time of your life on the mountain thanks to the cool crew, amazing mountains and bottomless powder.
Here’s the word from Silverton:
Silverton Mountain is now also open on Fridays for the rest of December. Starting in January the schedule goes to the regular Thursday through Sunday schedule. This is just in time for The Best Skiing in the History of Silverton Mountain. Silverton Mountain doesn’t get the holiday crowds, so now might be the time to sneak down to Silverton for the holidays. Unguided ski packages for 2 days skiing and 2 nights lodging are available for $150-$180. (Email them for details)
This is the Best December in History!
There has already been more than 100” of new snow this December, with each weekend providing a fresh coat of deep powder. The skiing has been incredibly good. If the forecast pans out, this will be the fourth consecutive powder weekend of the season. Last weekend we had Ropedeedope, Mandatory, Waterfall, Riff, Raff, Colorado, 100 Acre Woods, String, Rope, Splitski, Dolores, RMYF, Bowling Alley, Tiger 1-5, Tiger Main, Tiger Claw, and Concussion open. This weekend we are trying to add Pope Face, Chick Flick, Cabin, Stooges, and possibly the Wetspot. Depending on the weather the Grande and Zone 4 may open as well.

There are still available spaces for groups on most days this winter. This is a great time to start thinking about booking a trip to Silverton sometime this winter.
Looking for a Few Heli Skiers
We would like to bring in the heli for avalanche control on a more regular (but still limited) basis. It is the best tool for quickly opening new terrain, so if you would like to be added to our heli ski list let us know. The heli drops are usually on short notice as we don’t know exactly when we will want to conduct heli control work. The heli drops are obviously lots of fun and the least expensive way you will heli ski in the lower 48 at only $150 per drop.
As far as we know there are no other places in the lower 48 where you can pay by the run. Most drops occur across the valley from the lift in Zone 4, and occasionally when all the stars line up we also drop the lines off of Storm Peak in Zones 5 & 6. If you have your own group and want to book a private ship for just your crew we can also do that at a fixed hourly rate and can usually try to book that in advance. The heli holds 4-5 people, so making a group in multiples of 4 is a good way to go.
The Beating Film Festival
The Beating Film Festival has quickly gained a reputation as a must do on the winter calendar. The Beating was designed to be the “core” version of “The Meeting” (held in Aspen) where the big budget ski & snowboard films of the year premiere. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to submit a 5 minute (or shorter) film to the Silverton Film Fest. The Viewer’s Choice winner will take home $500 in cash from NossaTV. The Best Overall winner will spend a day at the Studio411 headquarters. Other prizes include editing software from Final Draft, K2 Pontoon skis, and loads of free gear.
The viewing and judging will be held at the Silverton Mountain Miners Theatre (1069 Greene street, 2nd Floor) on Friday January 4th, 2008 at 7 pm. Edited and polished films should be delivered in DVD format by January 2. The Viewer’s Choice award deadline has past but you can still submit films that can win other prizes.
