RAMP “Big Bambooski” Aims to be Your One Ski Quiver

Jason MitchellBy Jason MitchellMarch 21, 20143 Comments3 Mins Read

Everyone is looking for a bargain, but still wants it all. And, when it comes to skis, most skiers don’t have the luxury of a full quiver at their disposal. So, Park City-based RAMP Sports has the solution — the well-priced all-arounder dubbed the “Big Bambooski.”

This new ski will be introduced in fall 2014 and represents the ideal one-ski-quiver for riders froim coast-to-coast. With a versatile and still floaty 105mm underfoot, this symmetrical twin-tip should easily find a home on any mountain at any time and under all conditions.

Handmade right here in Park City, Utah using a bamboo core, the Big Bambooski is likely the most one of the most “American-made” skis available today.

    RAMP Sports Big Bambooski Specs:

    • Big Mountain/Powder Ski
    • Sidecut: 133-105-133
    • Sizes: 169, 179, 189
    • MSRP: $849
    • Direct: $599

And here’s the official release from RAMP:

Park City, UT (March 19, 2014)- RAMP Sports will expand its line of handcrafted skis with the all-new Big Bambooski. A versatile ski, designed to appeal to any skier type and ability; the Big Bambooski is the elusive one ski quiver we all want. Made with 105mm underfoot and twin tip design, this is a fun, forgiving ski ready for everything from backcountry touring to fresh groomers.

The Big Bambooski is a mid-fat symmetrical twin tip, and is designed to allow you to gracefully float on powder or carve smooth turns on hardpack. The turned up tail makes this nimble ski feel equally at home navigating big-mountain steeps and trees or stomping a trick switch off a backcountry kicker.

“The Big Bambooski will really help round out our ski line,” said Mike Kilchenstein, President and C.E.Snow of RAMP Sports. “The flat tails featured in some of our other models can make for a more aggressive ski, but the twin tip in the Big Bambooski provides a super easy, carefree ski that everyone will love.”

The Big Bambooski was born out of RAMP Sports’ rapid prototyping development program, which strives to bring the newest and best products available immediately to market as they are created, rather than wait for traditional once a year releases. The Big Bambooski, as with the entire RAMP line, features a sustainably forested bamboo core and is produced start to finish in RAMP’s state of the art, environmentally friendly Park City, Utah facility.

Expect to see these at your local resort during RAMP Sports Demo days or learn more at http://www.rampsports.com/skis/big-bambooski-2015.html

More American than… Voile, Praxis, DPS, Moment, Slant (also bamboo), ON3P, etc etc etc.? How do you figure?

Looks like I most certainly overstepped that statement by ignoring the many other US-made skis. Some that should have come to mind (Voile, DPS) and others that are simply off the radar in such a crowded market.

I know intimately many of the folks at Bluehouse, Surface, Salomon, K2 and full US-based manufacturing is difficult, if not impossible while still eeking out reasonable profit margins. I am curious if all these niche players have the backing to stay in the market long-term. Anyway, kind of an aside.

Truth is yes, there are others who are just as American, so I stand corrected. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.
