Solitude Resort: What’s New for 2008?

    0
By Jason Mitchell on November 6, 2007 News, Skiing

Solitude has always been a locals favorite for its low crowds, perfect frontside groomers and challenging backside terrain in Honeycomb Canyon. Located a scant 40 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport up Big Cottonwood Canyon, Solitude offers the quickest route from gate to lift. The base village has been completely revitalized as a key part of the ski-in/ski-out base area with all the lodging and amenities of larger resorts.

We reviewed the awesome terrain found in Honeycomb Canyon back in 2005 and loved every minute of it despite being in between storm cycles. We rallied the steeps of Boundary Chutes and Prince of Wales below the steep and craggy Honeycomb Cliffs. As is typical for Solitude, lift lines were nonexistent and good times were to be had around every corner.

    An Insider’s Tip

I’ve long been a fan of Solitude Resort. On powder days, Alta and Snowbird get tracked out in a matter of minutes (literally), and Brighton has a much higher concentration of teenagers on snowboards. But at Solitude you can find untracked in the trees and steeps of Honeycomb Canyon for days after a storm. The beauty of the area is astounding and the crowds are nearly always thinner than any other resort in Big or Little Cottonwood Canyons. If you’re looking for a mountain getaway with great turns for the whole family, Solitude is the place. You can bomb the frontside groomers and then head on back to Honecomb for powder stashes galore.

    New for This Season

The winter of 2007-2008 marks the 50th anniversary for Solitude Mountain Resort! Unreal that people have been making turns there for that long! Smack dab in the middle of over $6 mil. in improvements, Solitude takes somewhat of a breather this winter after many improvements in recent years. Here are some highlights.

    • The 50th anniversary will be marked with historical podcasts and retro events
    • The Inn at Solitude was completely remodeled with new furniture and amenities
    • A new winch cat joins the fleet of groomers to speed up the meticulous frontside grooming
