Stretchy and comfortable — with body armor
The thing that stands out to me the most is how stretchy the Dainese HG Shorts 2 are! They really move with you, no matter the movement. I didn’t realize ripstop fabric could be so elastic! I didn’t notice any constriction when swinging my leg over the seat, bailing off the bike, or crouching down to fix a flat. For this reason they are hands-down, one of the most comfortable pair of MTB shorts I’ve worn.
The ripstop fabric is tough. I thought the lightweight fabric and stretchiness would decrease durability. When I put them through the paces scraping tree branches and even grinding on some gravel and I was expecting to see the fabric fail. I was extremely surprised when I couldn’t find a single cut, snag, or tear!
One drawback to the ripstop fabric is breatheability. They do run warm, but if you’re wearing liner shorts, you’re going to be warm anyway! Dainese included a couple of elastic panels, one on the lower back and one in the crotch, for comfort and more stretch but they also help vent in those areas.
The pockets on the HG Shorts 2 are great. The design includes two front pockets, both with long zippers. The long zips make getting into and out of the pockets easy, even with gloves on. The pockets are roomy enough to hold a plus-sized phone, with ease. The zippers are also stiff enough that they are super easy to unzip while riding. It did take some finesse to get them to zip up one handed while riding though.
I’m 6’0″ and 185 lbs, I typically wear a size large in shorts and the HG Shorts 2 run true to size. Dainese built in two long velcro tabs giving you a lot of adjustability in the shorts.
