Kombi Bamboo Charcoal Merino Wool Base Layers Review

Jason MitchellBy Jason MitchellJanuary 24, 2010No Comments3 Mins Read

It’s time to re-consider your base layers… specifically, it’s time to think about the materials used in your base layers. Full-synthetic base layers are being joined by Merino wool, bamboo, charcoal and even coconut fibers. Kombi has a wide range of base layers these days, but the Bamboo Charcoal and Merino Wool-infused base layers are tops on the list.

About the Kombi Bamboo Charcoal and Merino Wool Base Layers

Available in a variety of colors and either 1/4 zip or crew collar, these base layers feature double-sided fabric. The inside fabric is Bamboo Charcoal for comfort, and antimicrobial qualities while the outside features a mixture of Merino Wool and polyester.

    More features:

    • Bamboo Charcoal inside for wicking and anti-microbial qualities
    • Merino Wool outside for warmth and moisture management
    • Flatlock seams for comfort
    • MSRP: $45 – Crew neck and $45 – Bottoms

Kombi Bamboo Charcoal and Merino Wool Base Layers Review

I’m a big fan of blended natural fibers these days and these base layers are a great example of how to execute a natural/synthetic blend. I’ve come to appreciate the comfortable feel next-to-skin and charcoal’s natural odor-fighting capabilities. These are the “do-it-all” midweight variety, which is really the sweet spot for base layers–not too thin and not too thick.

I’ve really appreciated the warmth and moisture-wicking capabilities of these base layers for skiing, trail running and other winter-time activities. The fit of the crew-neck top is great, but could use thumb-holes for a little extra coverage and to help keep them in place when slipping on an outer or extra mid-layer.

The bottoms are solid as well, but it seems like I have to fiddle with their positioning for a few minutes to have full freedom-of-movement. Once situated, they are comfortable indeed. The leg length is full-coverage, but the cuffs are easy to bunch up just above the top of my ski boots without cutting off my circulation.

    Good Kombi Base Layers

    • Comfortable next-to-skin
    • Not a super-snug cut, but just athletic enough
    • Fabric mix provides comfort, warmth and moisture wicking performance
    • Flatlock stitching

    Bad Kombi Base Layers

    • Sleeve length could be a tad longer
    • Thumbholes in sleeves would be nice
    • Bottoms take a few minutes to get properly settled

Bottom Line: Kombi Bamboo Charcoal Merino Wool Base Layers

When it comes to base layers… go with natural fiber combos. Kombi does a good job mixing all the buzzworthy fabrics in these affordable base layers.
