Velocio Luxe V2 Bib Shorts Review

Jason MitchellBy Jason MitchellAugust 16, 2023No Comments5 Mins Read

It appears we have achieved maximum bib short length these days. Like everyone, I really appreciate the longer bib shorts for added coverage, compression and sun protection. But, has Velocio gone too far with the new Luxe V2 Bib Shorts? The answer is quite possibly.

Velocio Luxe V2 Bib Shorts Features:

    • Ultra-High Gauge Compression Lycra: exceptional muscle support, excellent opacity, matte finish
    • Signature HD Chamois developed with Cytech
    • Updated for a longer inseam length of 29cm (up from 25cm on the Luxe)
    • 3-Panel design with fewer seams, lighter weight and added comfort
    • CONCEPT bib upper design for added support
    • Raw cut leg finish with internally printed silicone grip replaces elastic gripper
    • Seamless Microfiber bib straps
    • Reflective logos for added visibility
    • MSRP: $289

    Long length for added compression.

    The long shot bib shorts

This year, Velocio decided to take their Luxe Bib Shorts and make them even Luxe-r by adding 4cm to their length and updating the uppers for a more compressive overall fit. Calling these merely the Luxe V2 doesn’t do them justice as they are very different from the original.

For starters, let’s address the added length. Fair warning — short riders need not apply. Or, if you feel your legs are shorter than average, you’ll also want to look at the regular Luxe. What about me? I’m 5’11” and 175 lbs., with proportionate leg lengths and the 29cm inseam length just barely clears my knees. I’ve got about a centimeter or two once properly situated, but that’s it. With that added length, it does take a significant amount of calisthenics to get them in place. I’m talking, pulling, stretching, flexing and a fair bit of “high knees” before daring to hop on the bike. I’ll also add that if you live in humid conditions, all that situating becomes even more challenging because they stick to your legs.

Gravel or MTB are all on the menu.

A huge benefit to the taller uppers is the Luxe V2’s ability to cradle and hold in place my “dad bod.” No matter how hard I try, I’m not as svelte as I was 20 years ago and I really appreciate the love handle support these provide.

Okay, yes, it takes a bit of finagling to get them on, but once in place, that muscle-cradling comfort and compression is oh, so nice. The added length feels like my quads and hamstrings are getting a warm hug and with minimal seams, I’m digging the overall feel.

    Sleek and smooth at speed.

Up top, the laser-cut ventilation holes in the back panel allows added airflow and the ultra-soft straps provide a comfortable fit with or without a base layer. I don’t know why it’s so difficult to source soft, comfortable strap material, but I’m always amazed when I get the “cheese grater” effect. There is none of that with these soft straps. With all that added length and compression, it’s hard to find a weak spot in the armor, once you get situated.

For warm summer mornings and hot afternoons, the added leg coverage is both soothing and protective. There is no shame in covering up your lower thigh to prevent direct sunlight and harsh tan lines. And, should you get caught in a summer rain storm, all that compression and warmth comes in handy.

I’ve been impressed with the performance of the Signature HD Chamois and have found it to be solid overall. Still, it’s not class-leading, but the multi-density design does offer a solid perch for mountain biking, gravel and long road rides. My backside hasn’t complained and it stays put across a variety of riding positions and duration. I have noticed that unless I spend extra time getting situated, there is a small gap on the left side of the chamois. A little tug on the legs and some added flexing takes care of that. It seems that my body isn’t symmetrical, after all and neither is yours. It does offer good trail dampening and a great saddle feel.

Fit: I’m 5’11” and 175 lbs with a 31″ inseam and I’m wearing the size medium bib shorts.

    The Good:

    • Minimal seams
    • Excellent overall compression for solid muscle support
    • Uppers are like butter
    • That vented back panel comes in handy
    • Added height on either side keeps the “dad bod” in check
    • Chamois delivers

    The Bad:

    • Takes a lot of effort to get situated — especially in humidity
    • Wanted a little more from the chamois at this price point
    • Short legs need not apply

The Bottom Line: Velocio Luxe V2 Bib Shorts

Add some length to the inseam, then add a more supportive upper and you’ve got yourself a winning variation of the Luxe Bib Shorts. The Luxe V2 offers length in spades and muscle support beyond what you’ll find elsewhere. Spend the extra time getting situated and the Luxe V2 will be a willing partner for wherever or however you choose to ride. Check out our updated 2025 Velocio LUXE Bib Shorts review.
