Foot-cradling comfort
I do like a good pair of compression socks for running and cycling. Firm, contoured support makes my feet feel cradled and comfortable on long and short rides alike. Since their arrival, I’ve spent countless hours riding in the Swiftwick Aspire Fives indoors. Immediately, I noticed the firm compression and overall comfort — surprising for such a thin sock. And, since I prefer thin socks, this is a double-win for me.
Venturing out on the road and gravel, the Aspire Five socks maintain that even compression for optimal blood flow and support. Worn with both the Bontrager RSL Road Shoe and the Shimano S-Phyre XC9, I have maintained excellent bike feel on all sorts of terrain. The close-fitting design doesn’t interfere with on-bike or on-trail sensations while also nailing the proper fit. Knitting is varied throughout the sock to optimize performance, wear, compression and comfort. Moisture wicking is also worth noting as it travels away from my feet and away. The end result is a form-fitting sock that wicks moisture and doesn’t add unnecessary bulk.
The sock height is good for those not wanting anything extra-long. I’ve found them to stay in place quite well — even after the most aggressive rides. The deep heel cup and smooth, seamless toe box are both notable highlights as they allow for a secure and comfortable fit. You get what you pay for and the clean toe box is well worth the price of entry. And, a deeper heel cup is made possible by a Y-stitched design that allows further stretching to the contours of your heel. This feature is found on the best socks on the market. Rounding out my review, I slipped into the Hoka Speedgoat 5 GTX trail runners and went on a 6-mile run. The same fit characteristics for cycling also play out well for trail running. I appreciated the snug-fitting design and my feet felt refreshed and comfortable. The white sample socks did get dirty while trail running and on gravel rides. Thankfully, there are several black designs that will be more forgiving of natural terrain.
After many hours of use and several washings, the Aspire Five’s remain just as good as day one. And, should you wish for a little taller sock, I’ve been testing the Aspire Seven and actually love the added height for road/gravel and the Aspire Five for trail running.

The Bottom Line
Swiftwick has long made high-quality socks here in the USA and the new Aspire Five is another great option in their product mix. As a mid-height sock, the Aspire Five also provides excellent compression and fit. I love the light and thin design and I also appreciate the compression and moisture wicking properties.
