There was a time when I would have never considered wearing a base layer on hot, summer days. Cool mornings or cold winter days were a no-brainer, but adding layers in the summer? No, it’s not crazy talk and yes, the Velocio Gravel/Trail Base Layer is a great option for year-round use.

All about that base
With a lightweight 100% recycled polyester mesh fabric, the Gravel Base Layer works wonders. To get the best performance from any base layer, it should have a snug fit. Velocio knows that and the mesh fabric used offers excellent stretch and comfort underneath bibs and any jersey — long or short-sleeve.
Using a checkered mesh weave, the Velocio Gravel Base Layer provides loft and airflow, which are key ingredients to moisture management. It also provides outstanding next-to-skin comfort. As mentioned, it fits snug (which is just what you want), and it has a touch extra length (another good attribute) so it stays tucked into your bib shorts.
For added utility, Velocio chose to add three jersey pockets at the rear of the base layer. Under a pair of bib shorts, those pockets do have limited function. But, an ID or credit card fits great in there, or a gel packet or two. Really, anything that can sit flat does work. Or, if you’re not a bib shorts person, they then become even more usable. I did wear it mountain biking underneath the Gore Wear TrailKPR Daily Jersey and with the Gore Wear Fernflow Shorts with much success. I carried gels, a small pump, multi-tool and my phone comfortably and securely underneath it all. If that’s your jam, you will definitely find added utility with the Gravel Base Layer.
The rest of the time, I’ve been wearing this base layer under the Velocio Signature short-sleeve or long-sleeve jerseys and Foundation Bib Shorts. I’ve ridden on cold mornings and warm afternoons and on road, gravel and MTB rides. One thing remains the same — this base layer absolutely optimizes moisture management. On cold mornings in the mountains, it adds extra warmth. And even on the hottest days, it optimizes comfort.
One of the byproducts of wearing a base layer is that your jersey will remain fresher for longer. I can wear it with the same jersey across multiple days without it becoming unbearably smelly. Something to note… Velocio has called this both the Trail Base Layer and Gravel Base Layer — assumingely trying to expand market reach.
