2012 Niner Jet 9 RDO Unveiled

Jason MitchellBy Jason MitchellJune 21, 20117 Comments3 Mins Read

After years of denial (actually extreme secrecy), Niner Bikes officially announced the next-generation Jet 9 RDO carbon fiber full-suspension bike. I’ve been told this bike has been years in development and, not wanting to suffer from the availability issues that plagued the Air 9 Carbon, Niner has bit their tongue and waited until the time and production was right.

With luck, I’ll get a few hours in the saddle later this week, but if not now then soon enough I’ll have some ride time on what looks to be the most advanced carbon full-suspension 29er on the market. I wonder what’s next from Niner? Perhaps the RIP 9 Carbon? The details of the frame will trickle in over the next few days, but there are some highlights:

    • 100mm travel via Niner’s patented CVA Suspension
    • Compatible with 100mm or 120mm tapered forks
    • Custom-valved Fox RP23 with Kashima coating
    • Internal cable routing for front and rear derailleurs
    • Direct-mount front derailleur
    • Colors: Black Licorice, Tang, Vana White
    • MSRP: $2599 (frame only)

More Jet 9 RDO Details from Niner

The swooping curves and strong lines of this frame began with testing data based on our own and competitor’s products, helping us to determine baseline tube shapes and thicknesses for best performance. Applied to a set of design parameters, this data also drove our targets for strength, stiffness and damping characteristics. The result – an aesthetically striking form whose curves are functionally derived.

Next, we employ the data referenced above in our robust R&D program – computer modeling, physical prototype testing (both in-house and at independent testing facilities), and hours of ride testing under our 10 highly skilled and abusive test riders. This aggressive approach helps us to produce a carbon monocoque frame that far exceeds CEN safety standards and for which we are proud to offer our C5 Carbon Warranty (five years).

The Jet 9 RDO features Niner’s patented CVA suspension (U.S. Patent No. 7,934,739). For those seeking the advantages of 29” wheels combined with pedaling efficiency across all 3-chainrings, CVA is an obvious front-runner. On the Jet 9 Carbon, this climbing benefit, combined with the small bump compliance of a system with no chain growth, means you ride faster and smoother – perfect for a carbon full suspension speedster.

Custom forged linkages contribute to the stellar performance of the Jet 9 RDO – preserving power transfer through the entire system. Additionally, all linkage pivots are outfitted with Enduro brand full complement sealed cartridge bearings for a smooth, friction-free suspension.

Speaking of friction free – the Jet 9 RDO is spec’d with a custom-valved Fox Float RP 23 with Kashima coating. This silky smooth coating fills microscopic surface inconsistencies for less stiction and better response to terrain.
The looks may attract your eye, and the CVA suspension may appeal to your intellectual side, but the design features of the Jet 9 RDO will convince the luxury lover in you to take the plunge. This frame features next generation internal cable routing for a clean look, precise alloy hardware interfaces for direct mount brakes and post mount disc-brake mounts for weight savings and good looks.

The Jet 9 RDO features our C5 warranty – We maintain that our carbon fiber testing and design rivals the best in the bike industry. Rather than just talking about it, we choose to demonstrate this commitment via our 5 year warranty and commitment to customer service.

The new Jet9 RDO frame retails for $2599.00 and includes a custom-valved Fox Float Kashima RP23 rear shock and titanium anti chain suck protection plates.

I’m a big fan of LAMP too, but I’m not so sure what that has to do with the RDO. Fill me in.

Unfortunately, my ride time never happened. I’m hoping for some saddle time this Fall after the whole Eurobike, Interbike run. I should be getting one to ride locally at that time. We’ll see.

Thanks Jason. Were you ever able to get some time on the RDO? Curious how it fits relative performance wise to the Jet and RIP?

Not yet. Hoping for Spring… I sure wish I had gotten some ride time on one, but they are pretty hard to corral these days still. Stay tuned!
