Even before Fabian Cancellara rolled up to the starting line of the 2016 Strade Bianche with a new bike, I knew Trek had something up there sleeves. That Ace in the hole was, in fact, the 2017 Trek Domane SLR and on that bike, Cancellara took the win.
Trek could not have asked for a better introduction to the world. The Internet buzzed as photos were dissected on all the cycling sites and forums worldwide. Well, now the Domane SLR is official. It’s available and it will be special — taking an already-capable platform and making it even better. It now offers unparalleled comfort and coupled with enough tire clearance to easily go from road to pave, then to gravel and back again.
Us mere mortals can certainly benefit from the improved compliance, comfort and stability provided by the new Domane SLR. As Trek’s best-selling model, these improvements will win over more riders and get people on a bike that will allow them to ride longer without the associated fatigue. These bones are not getting any younger, so anything that helps me ride in comfort is well-received, in my opinion.
With caliper brakes, tire clearance is 28c and with discs the clearance is 32c. Going discs will also include 12mm thru-axles front and rear (likely the new standard). A variety of build kits are available with the top build decked out using SRAM RED eTap — and an appropriate price to match.
The SLR is available now in several builds from $4,999 to $10,999.
