Joggers are everywhere and for good reason. They are comfortable and versatile around the house, to the office or on the trail. For just those occasions, I’ve been enjoying the Black Diamond Notion Pants as my go-to cruisers for daily adventures.

Get up and go pants
While Black Diamond is most known for their climbing equipment, their apparel line has become quite a hit over the past 10+ years since entering into that market. And, while climbing remains core to the brand, it’s great to see some versatility across their lineup. With the Black Diamond Notion Pants, they are made for all-around use, but still stay true to the ethos of Black Diamond by leaning towards both indoor and outdoor climbing. While I didn’t test them at the local crag, they have been my go-to pants for just about everything.
Organic cotton is a trusted material for comfort and Black Diamond has infused just enough elastane to these to allow them to stretch when needed. The fabric does feel a touch thick, but that adds to the durability story. I have also found them to shrink, as expected, after going through the dryer. So, I have a tendency to wear them multiple times between washes because they get more and more comfortable with use.
Using a soft, elastic waistband, you don’t feel the wrinkles in the cotton next to your skin. And, the drawstring ensures that the Notion Pant doesn’t turn into a plumber’s special for anyone spectating behind you. A quick tightening of the drawstring and I’m good to go for any extreme maneuvers.
I love how deep the front pockets are and how accessible they are as well. The drop entry allows access when worn with a harness, but also just makes it easy for everyday use. The single-right rear pocket comes in handy for stashing something in a hurry and the zippered leg pocket is perfect for a phone or wallet.
Separating the Notion Pants from a standard pair of joggers is the knockout fit they provide. Much of that is due to the gusseted crotch for added space and freedom-of-movement. Additionally, the articulated double-thick knees allow the legs to sit just right and add a touch of durability where needed (they are made by Black Diamond, after all). The wide leg cuffs aren’t tight, but keep the legs gathered nicely for a clean and comfortable look.
As opposed to the Patagonia Terrebone Joggers, the Black Diamond Notion Pants have a little more generous fit throughout the thighs and calves. The material doesn’t ever get “stuck” on my muscles as I stand up, sit down or tackle any adventures. But, the material isn’t my favorite for warm summer days due to the added thickness and the black color I’ve been testing. And hey, they have been great for watching chilly football games this fall.
Fit: I’m 5’11” and 175 lbs., wearing the size medium Notion Pants. I typically wear a 33 waist and 32 inseam in most pants, for reference.

The Bottom Line
Initially, the thick-feeling cotton stretch material had me wondering just how comfortable the Notion Pant would be. However, after several months of all-around use, I'm a fan and keep these as part of my normal weekly routine. You can push them hard at the local pitches or simply wear them around town in style. With all the colors available, be sure to get a second pair.
