My optimal trail running shorts typically include a built-in compression short liner. Those dinky liners are only the best for the hottest days, or if you’re in a pinch. But still, if given the choice, I’m still going for shorts with a compression-style liner. With the latest Patagonia Endless Run Shorts, Patagonia has simply taken a compression liner and built pockets and a faux “short” out of them. And welp, it works.

Compression shorts with a twist
Patagonia’s product designers painstakingly work side-by-side with their athlete team to deliver new product innovations and updates. Plain old compression shorts may “do the job” but the latest Endless Run Shorts don’t just tweak a pair of compression shorts. Instead, they have wrapped some of the best short features into a set of compression tights. But maybe it’s the best compression short features mixed into a pair of running shorts? Either way, the end result is a versatile and comfortable pair of trail running shorts built to go the distance.
On the longest runs, you need the ability to carry more stuff along the trail. The Patagonia Slope Runner Endurance Vest is a good option, but handheld hydration in concert with the Endless Run Shorts just might cover the bulk of those runs without an added vest.
The construction is straightforward on the outside, but there’s definitely much more than meets the eye. In pictures, they appear more shorts-like from the front, but are pretty much a compression short from the back. That said, digging deeper will reveal more tricks. The front side features a modesty panel that keeps your anatomy obfuscated. But the backside is straight-up tights. I dig the simplicity and added coverage for post-run adventures in mixed company. Most recently, I’ve gone from running to yard work while visiting family Pipestone, MN without too many jeers from extended family.
Initial miles were on cold mornings. What’s interesting is Patagonia built the front panel for added breathability (and it breathes well), but there’s no mistaking the backside chill you’ll feel when running in cold temperatures. Interestingly, the frontside doesn’t feel chilly. Presumably this is due to the double-layers that isolate the cold from your skin. The double-fabric combo is optimized for moisture transfer and airflow. As an added bonus, it makes the whole package ultra-comfortable. The micro-grid front fabric optimally distributes moisture away from your skin. Good luck getting that kind of performance from a simple pair of compression shorts.
As far as storage goes, the rear mesh pocket is great for cards/ID or a gel packet or two. The dual leg pockets are great for a phone and a few gels. I’ve been comfortably running with my iPhone 13 Mini and SiS gels. Around the house, I can stash keys, socks and more in the roomy leg pockets. Again, Patagonia’s designers haven’t missed a beat with the pocket design. On the inside, the outer panel is lined with a tight mesh (same as the rear pocket). The mesh allows easier entry/exit and adds a dose of durability. It’s ingenious really and makes these pockets delightful to use while keeping items secure and stable.
One of the beauties of compression shorts is chafe-free performance. I’ve spent hours trail running in a variety of temperatures here in Utah and in the hot humidity of Minnesota. Across all conditions, I’ve enjoyed proper compression and chafe-free performance. The leg cuffs stay put and the cozy waistband is fantastic.
