Ahhh, Snowbird… home of the longest season and the most vertical in the state. Resort owner, Dick Bass, has been and continues to be one of the most visionary and ambitious in the industry. An aerial tram, 10 modern chairlifts, 2,500 skiable acres of Utah powder and 3,240 ft. of vertical highlight the goods to be found at Snowbird, which has been serving up smiles since 1971. A full-service ski-in ski-out base facility boasts almost 900 rooms and 15 restaurants.
When it comes down to it, you can never have a bad day skiing at Snowbird. The place is expansive and the terrain is awesome. Bluebird powder days are a bit frenzied, but storm skiing at the Bird can be one of the best experiences of your life.
An Insider’s Tip
If you want to get the most vertical and see your legs turn to Jello, Snowbird is your best option. No other Utah resort enables you to do lap after lap of the steep and deep via either top-to-bottom high-speed quads, or the legendary aerial tram. Then there’s the cool factor of the magic carpet tunnel that transports you from Little Cottonwood to the North Fork of American Fork Canyon–enabling intermediate skiers to access the goods on the Mineral Basin side. Snowbird is the ultimate in kick-butt ski experience from top to bottom. And with over 500 inches of annual snowfall, it piles up high and deep.
New for This Season
After a ton of improvements for last season (new Peruvian lift and access tunnel to Mineral Basin), Snowbird is taking things fairly easy this year on the mountain. But, there are several notable improvements and cool things worth mentioning.
- Extensive new snowmaking improvements in Peruvian Gulch with coverage from the top of Chip’s Run all the way down to the base (3,000 ft. below)
- Re-grading a large section of Chip’s Run to make it more intermediate-friendly
- Freeskiing and big mountain legend (and all-around good guy), Dean Cummings brings his Big Mountain camps to the Bird
- Groundbreaking of Mt. Superior Residence Club (the first real estate development in two decades) with slated opening in 2009
